Physical and Health Education Courses

Gr 9 and 10: Physical and Health Education

The combined Physical Education/Health Education (PHE) curriculum is designed to address the 5 major health risks for children and youth. 

They are: 

  • inadequate physical activity  
  • unhealthy dietary behaviour 
  • drug use, including alcohol and tobacco 
  • sexual behaviours that result in STIs and unintended pregnancies 
  • behaviours that result in intentional and unintentional injuries 

 

The aim of the curriculum is to provide students with planned and balanced programming to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for physically active and healthy lifestyles. The vision for our students is a physically active and healthy lifestyle for all. 

Curriculum content is organized within the following five general learning outcomes:

  1. Movement 
  2. Fitness Management 
  3. Safety 
  4. Personal and Social Management 
  5. Healthy Lifestyles Practices 

 

A semester in gr 9 and 10 PHE will include instruction in the following five physical activity categories:  

  • Individual/Dual Sports/Games  
  • Team/Group Sports/Games  
  • Alternative Pursuits 
  • Rhythmic/Gymnastic Activities  
  • Fitness Activities 

 

In the health component, healthy decision-making is emphasized related to the following strands or topics:  

  • Safety of Self and Others
  • Personal Development  
  • Social Development  
  • Mental-Emotional Development
  • Personal Health Practices  
  • Active Living  
  • Nutrition 
  • Substance Use and Abuse Prevention
  • Human Sexuality 

 

Gr 11 and 12 Physical and Health Education

Students have some options for taking their mandatory Gr 11 and 12 PHE credit.

Those options include:

  • Active Health Lifestyles (AHL) 
  • Principles of Resistance Training 
  • Principles of Basketball 

Active Health Lifestyles Phys. Ed.

Gr 11 and 12:

This compulsory course in grades 11 & 12 is designed to help students take greater ownership of their own physical fitness, to encourage students to seek out activities that interest them and to engage in active lifestyles for the future. Students will study topics related to:

  • Fitness management
  • Nutrition 
  • Personal & social development
  • Healthy relationships.

 

As part of earning credit for this mandatory course, students will be physically active in different environments and will have the opportunity to participate in a number of physical activities; ranging from individual pursuits to team activities. 

AHL is also composed of a Core component - health-related topics. Projects and/or assignments will make up this part of the course. The second half of the course is activity-related - Movement & Fitness Management. 

Students will be graded for completion of the course with a Complete or Incomplete designation; no percentage grade will be given but certain requirements in the Activity and the Core components must be met to earn the credit.

 

Principles of Resistance Training Phys. Ed.

Gr. 11 Resistance Training:

This physical education introductory course to resistance training will focus on helping students gain knowledge and understanding of weight training, including equipment and proper technique with free, body, and machine-weighted exercises.  Students will also develop an understanding of resistance training benefits that will allow them to create a personalized program based on individual goals (muscular strength, muscular endurance, muscle size, flexibility).  

Students will study topics related to:

  •  Cardiorespiratory concepts
  •  Muscular concepts
  •  Nutrition
  •  Principles of health and fitness
  •  Skeletal & muscular anatomy

This course is also designed to help students take greater ownership of their own physical fitness, encouraging and guiding them to lead an active and healthy lifestyle that will persist into their future.

Gr 12 Resistance Training:

**Successful completion of the Gr 11 Principles of Resistance Training phys ed course is a prerequisite for taking the gr 12 course**

This physical education course will continue from the gr. 11  resistance training course, to focus on helping students gain greater knowledge and understanding of weight training, including equipment and proper technique with free, body, and machine-weighted exercises.  Students will also develop an understanding of resistance training benefits that will allow them to create a personalized program based on individual goals (muscular strength, muscular endurance, muscle size, flexibility).

  •  Skeletal & muscular anatomy

Principles of Basketball Phys. Ed.

Principles of Basketball Phys Ed students will have the opportunity to earn their PHE credit with the major focus for the Activity Component will be on the sport of Basketball. 

Units of study will focus on:

  • basketball skills and tactics
  • fitness programming and training
  • sport psychology
  • sport nutrition
  • basketball anatomy and physiology 

The core health component will focus on:

  • Fitness management
  • Nutrition 
  • Personal & social development
  • Healthy relationships.

Principles of Football Phys. Ed.

Principles of Football Phys Ed students will have the opportunity to earn their PHE credit with the major focus for the Activity Component will be on the sport of Football. 

Units of study will focus on:

  • Football skills and tactics
  • fitness programming and training
  • sport psychology
  • sport nutrition
  • basketball anatomy and physiology 

The core health component will focus on:

  • Fitness management
  • Nutrition 
  • Personal & social development
  • Healthy relationships.
