BYOD and Google Apps for Education at PCI

Portage Collegiate is using BYOD and Google Apps for Education to allow students access to technology for learning on their mobile devices.  In partnership with Google Apps for Education and specifically Google Classroom, students can access their school work anywhere, anytime, and on any device that connects to the internet.  This allows students to view and complete work for their courses inside class or outside of class time, on their phone, tablet or computer.  The BYOD model allows for maximum flexibility in completing schoolwork and supports whatever, wherever and whenever learning.

What is BYOD?

BYOD stands for "Bring Your Own Device" and it means that students have the opportunity to use devices that are available to them as learning devices for school.  Typically this means that students could use their phones to access or complete school work.  Students with tablets would be allowed to use these as well.  It also means that when at home, students can also use their computers if available.  BYOD with Google Apps for Education allows for a device-independent learning experience and student are encouraged to use any or all devices available to them, as appropriate and required by the assignments in class.

BYOD Explained

What is Google Apps for Education and Google Classroom

Google Apps for Education (GAE) is a set of services provided by Google for educational organizations.  It is similar to personal Google Accounts you may be familiar with which include gmail, the difference being is that GAE accounts are managed by PCI and the Portage la Prairie School division.  The division creates, monitors and manages accounts created for students as Google accounts used specifically for education.

Google Apps for Education includes a suite of applications including Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Google Classroom, among others.  Google Classroom is an online classroom environment that is used by teachers and students for course delivery.  Students enroll into a course setup by their teacher where they can get resources, communicate with the teacher and their classmates, get and complete assignments, ask and get questions answered and more.  Google Classroom allows students get and complete their course work wherever and whenever.
